Our History Introduction

ccebjThe JBACE was established in 1978 to oversee the implementation of one of the first environmental and social protection regimes in North America. Construction of the La Grande hydroelectric complex and planning of the Nottaway-Broadback-Rupert (NBR) project were in full swing at the time, and the JBACE members were concerned about the quality of the follow-up studies and application of the environmental assessment process.

Beginning in the 1980s, the JBACE turned its attention more to forestry operations while continuing to address local issues such as drinking water quality. The Committee members put considerable effort into justifying the JBACE’s role to the governments in order to obtain the funding needed to fully carry out the Committee’s mandate.
