Climate Change

The Territory has been experiencing critical impacts from climate change at an increasing rate. In recent years, forest fires have ravaged large parts of the Territory, the ice regime has become increasingly unpredictable and precipitation has changed. This is affecting the Cree way of life and their traditional activities.

Recent Activities :

  • Fall 2018: participation in the Regional Forum on Climate Change held in the Cree Nation of Eastmain
  • Fall 2018: publication of a report titled State of Climate Change and Adaptation Knowledge for the Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory prepared by Ouranos for the JBACE
  • Fall 2019: coordination of the Cree consultation for the development of the Green Economy Plan held in the Ouje-Bougoumou Cree Nation
  • Winter 2023: publication of a fact sheet on the impacts of climate change in the Territory in English and in French
  • Winter 2023: internal JBACE workshop with Cree, federal and provincial representatives to get an update on the parties’ climate change initiatives in the Territory
  • Spring 2024: participation in the Cree Regional Climate Forum held in the Ouje-Bougoumou Cree Nation
