Conservation and Biodiversity
Conservation is an important issue in the Territory. Certain wildlife species are of great cultural importance to the Crees, particularly those whose harvesting is expressly reserved for them under Section 24 of the JBNQA. Biodiversity conservation is intrinsically linked to the preservation of Cree culture and traditional practices.
Recent Activities:
- Summer 2023-summer 2024: participation in the various consultation phases for the development of the Government of Québec’s 2030 Nature Plan
- Summer 2023-summer 2024: participation in the various consultation phases for the development of Canada’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy
- May 2025-March 2026: comments on many governmental initiatives (draft regulations on biodiversity reserves, 2025–2030 Ministerial Plan for Clientele Development and Promotion of Wildlife-Related Activities, Climate Change Adaptation Policy Framework for Biodiversity Conservation and Management
- Ongoing: monitoring federal and provincial initiatives for the protection of caribou
